Programs By Request
Want to schedule a homeschool program at our of our nature preserves for your group? We offer 2-hour programs by request for groups of 6 or more homeschoolers. Some programs can be held at our other Preserves upon request.
Programs are designed for children ages 5 and up and cost $12/child.
You can choose one of the following programs:
Skulls and Bones
What can we learn about an animal by studying its skull? Become a skull detective as we learn how teeth and eye placement help us determine who a skull belongs to. We’ll also take a hike to explore other animal signs such as tracks, scat and animal homes. By the end of the program, you’ll be a pro at identifying our wild animal neighbors.
Decomposition Detectives
Decomposers are an important part of the food chain. We’ll learn about Nature’s FBI agents (Fungi, Bacteria and Invertebrates) and how they recycle nutrients and help plants grow. We’ll explore a composting worm bin and go on a Nature FBI hike in search of decomposers at work!
Birding Basics
Birds are fascinating! Come become a bird watcher and learn how to identity some common birds by call and sight. We’ll set out on the trails with binoculars to try to identify and record as many different bird species as possible.
Beaver Believers
Cool Spring Preserve is home to a pair of beavers who are master builders. Over time they have created beautiful wetland habitat. We’ll study these amazing ecosystem engineers and learn about how the changes they cause to a landscape benefits people and wildlife alike. Then, we’ll set out on the trains to look for beaver signs on the preserve.
Trees are the Key
Age Range: 8 and up
Have you ever wondered what kind of trees live in your yard? Now is your chance to learn! Join us as we discover how to use a dichotomous key to ID local trees before we hit the trails and ID the diversity of trees on the preserve.
