Join Joette Borzik for a bird walk at Altona Marsh in Jefferson County.

Altona Marsh is a rare, 70 acre marl wetland protected by a Nature Conservancy easement. It is a good site for birding not only because it offers a rich variety of species, but also because the terrain offers easy viewing.

Meet at 8:00 a.m. at Altona Marsh.

To access the marsh from Charles Town, WV, follow Route 51 (Middleway Pike) West for approximately 2 miles. Turn right on Piedmont Drive, which is a dirt road.  Park on Piedmont Lane along the road edge so as not to block driving access of the road. Meet the trip leader on the dirt road before approaching the railroad tracks.

Altona Marsh is free however requires registration.

In addition, at the beginning of the trip, participants will need to sign a waiver and release as the walk is through a protected site with access issues.

Anyone with an interest is welcome to come along, regardless of their birding skills. Children ages 12 and up are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

The group will be looking for migrating waterfowl and winter resident species.
Loaner binoculars will be available for anyone who needs them.

Dress for the weather, including sturdy footwear, and bring drinking water.  The trip may be canceled in the event of bad weather.
