What: Field Trip to the National Weather Service's Baltimore/Washington Forecast Office

Postponed due to the forecasted snow storm. We will notify you once the National Weather Office informs us of the rescheduled date.

Where: Sterling, VA

When: Monday, January 26, 2015

Time: Tour begins at 10:00 a.m. - Carpool meets at 8:45 a.m.

Join Debbie for this educational field trip to the National Weather Service's Forecast Office in Sterling VA on Monday January 26. 

The tour is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m..

There is no fee for this tour and parking is available on site. 

This event is open to the public however registration is required and the minimum age for the tour is 12 years of age. 

An identification card is required and in order to go on this tour you must be a US citizen (Federal regulations).

The group will tour the weather station office, meet the meteorologists and observe how the National Weather Station uses hardware and software programs to create forecasts. In addition, you will see the equipment that is used to gather and monitor data and the quality control methods. 

Anyone interested in carpooling should plan on meeting in the parking lot of the Charles Town Walmart store just east of Charles Town on Route 340. The meeting point will be in the southeast corner of the parking lot on the Route 340 side to the right of the stores Market entrance. From Walmart it is a 45 minute drive.

For those who prefer to drive to the Weather Service's Office, the address is 43858 Weather Service Road, off Old Ox Road (VA Route 606)  just west of the Dulles Greenway Toll Road (VA Route 267). There are 2 gates to enter into the facility, either one can be used. Drivers will be asked to ring a buzzer at the gate. Please let the guard know you are there for the Potomac Valley Audubon tour.

The tour could be canceled due to staffing or weather issues however we will notify you the evening prior if any issues arise.
