Join Larry Stritch, retired U.S. Forest Service botanist, for a winter tree-identification field trip at Shannondale Springs WMA.  This is a family-friendly event that will teach you how to identify trees by such factors as their shapes, branching habits, twigs, and bark.

Shannondale Springs WMA is located on the east bank of the Shannondale River in Jefferson County, about 4 miles east of Charles Town.

Participants will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the parking lot by the WMA boat launch site off Mission Road.

The 1,361 acre Shannondale Springs property is managed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. It includes a mixture of forest, brush land and open fields covering rolling hills. The trip will involved walking about 2 miles over moderately even ground.

There is no fee and anyone with an interest is welcome to come along. Children are welcome.

Registration is not required, however is strongly encouraged.

Those who participate should be sure to dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear.

If the weather is especially inclement on the day of the trip, it will be rescheduled (date TBA).
