Join the Potomac Valley Audubon Society on Wednesday, November 8th at 7:00 PM for our regular monthly program.

Mr. Hershberger, local bird expert, presents “The Amazing Songs of the Vesper Sparrow".

Wil Hershberger, who lives in Hedgesville, is one of the area's leading naturalists.

Inspired by Don Kroodsma’s, “The Singing Life of Birds,” Wil started to listen carefully to the songs of Vesper Sparrows. Wil had recorded Vesper Sparrows in southern Berkeley County, WV years ago, but found that they were all gone. The only location with more than one or two male Vesper Sparrows during the breeding season was found to be the Antietam National Battlefield, Sharpsburg, MD.

In Wil’s talk we’ll learn about the Vesper Sparrow’s natural history, how we study bird songs, the amazing way we can “see” bird songs, and the fascinating way that Vesper Sparrows compose their songs.

Wil has been photographing and recording the natural world for more than two decades and his work has been published in magazines, calendars, and books. He is coauthor of "the Songs of Insects", a book and audio CD published by Houghton-Mifflin Company. He is also an instructor of our very popular Birding 101 class.

His recordings of birds, frogs and insects are archived at the Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.

His website can be found at natureimagesandsounds.com

This program is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
