Meet at the large parking area off Canal Road, carpooling recommended

Join Larry Stritch for a winter tree-identification field trip along the C&O Canal across from Shepherdstown.  This is a family-friendly event that will teach you how to identify trees by such factors as their shapes, branching habits, twigs and buds, and bark.

Participants will meet at 10:00 a.m. in the large parking lot off Canal Road. You can access Canal Road from Shepherdstown just after crossing the bridge (Route 34) towards Sharpsburg, take the first right turn onto Canal Road. From Sharpsburg, it will be your last left turn off of Route 34 before going over the bridge into Shepherdstown.

Trip leader, Dr. Stritch, recently retired from the U.S. Forest Service where he worked as a botanist for 30 years. He is an expert in native plant identification, propagation, and gardening with native plants. He is also an expert in pollination ecology and recently served as staff to President Obama's Pollinator Health Task Force where he helped author the National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Beens and Other Pollinators and Pollinator Friendly Best Management Practices for Federal Lands. In addition, he has served on the Federal Interagency Monarch High Level Working Group. 

The total time of the trip will be nearly two hours.

Those who participate should be sure to dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear.

Registration is required. Parking is limited so carpooling is encouraged.
