    What:  Winter Tree Identification along the C&O Canal

    Where:  Along the C&O Canal across from Shepherdstown

    Meet at the large parking area off Canal Road, carpooling recommended

    Join Larry Stritch for a winter tree-identification field trip along the C&O Canal across from Shepherdstown.  This is a family-friendly event that will teach you how to identify trees by such factors as their shapes, branching habits, twigs and buds, and bark.

    Participants will meet at 10:00 a.m. in the large parking lot off Canal Road. You can access Canal Road from Shepherdstown just after crossing the bridge (Route 34) towards Sharpsburg, take the first right turn onto Canal Road. From Sharpsburg, it will be your last left turn off of Route 34 before going over the bridge into Shepherdstown.

    Trip leader, Dr. Stritch, recently retired from the U.S. Forest Service where he worked as a botanist for 30 years. He is an expert in native plant identification, propagation, and gardening with native plants. He is also an expert in pollination ecology and recently served as staff to President Obama's Pollinator Health Task Force where he helped author the National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Beens and Other Pollinators and Pollinator Friendly Best Management Practices for Federal Lands. In addition, he has served on the Federal Interagency Monarch High Level Working Group. 

    The total time of the trip will be nearly two hours.

    Those who participate should be sure to dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear.

    Registration is required. Parking is limited so carpooling is encouraged.

    Time: 6:00 - 7:00 pm (just prior to the Monthly Program)

    Hosts: Certified Master Naturalists and the Master Naturalist Coordinating Committee

    We welcome everyone to stop by our Open House for Prospective Master Naturalists on Wednesday, January 10 from 6 PM to 7 PM at Hospice of the Panhandle.

    Have you been wondering how you can help protect West Virginia’s natural resources? Then this open house is for you!

    Stop by and learn about the training and volunteer opportunities offered by the W.V. Master Naturalist Program at the Potomac Valley Chapter’s Open House. Meet some Master Naturalists, see examples of volunteer projects, and have your questions answered.

    Our Master Naturalist Program is for ages 16 years and older.

    Registration for the open house is not required but encouraged.

    If you are currently a certified Master Naturalist, please feel free to bring along a friend that might be interested in becoming one as well! 

    The open house is just prior to the regular PVAS Monthly Program at Hospice of the Panhandled which will begin at 7:00 PM.

    The Hospice of the Panhandle is located directly across the street from Shop and Save, Kearneysville, WV at 330 Hospice Lane off of the old Route 9 (Charles Town Rd./Hwy 115).

    Join us for a day of maintenance at Cool Spring Preserve! We'll work together to accomplish invasive species removal, maintain walking trails and improve the preserve habitat overall. Gather among friends while we complete some outdoor maintenance work at Cool Spring Preserve.  Your help is appreciated as every pair of hands helps make a difference! 

    All necessary training, tools, gloves will be provided. Light refreshments will also be available. Cool Spring Preserve has indoor bathrooms and water.

    Join Rodney Dever, a member of the WV Native Plant Society, for a winter tree-identification field trip at Eidolon Nature Preserve.  This is a family-friendly event that will teach you how to identify trees by such factors as their shapes, branching habits, twigs, and bark.

    Eidolon Nature Preserve is located on Sidling Hill along Orleans Rd. in Great Cacapon, WV. The entrance is marked by a teal metal gate, participants can park along the road or if the gate is open there is ample parking inside the preserve. 

    Participants will meet at 10:00 a.m. and hike around the preserve identifying trees. The preserve is very hilly and has well marked trails. Please wear appropriate footwear, bring trekking poles if desired, and be prepared for variable weather. 

    The 354 acre Eidolon Nature Preserve is the largest PVAS preserve.  It includes a mixture of hardwood forest, including thick groves of mountain laurel and spectacular views. The trip will involved walking between 1-2 miles on narrow trails that climb up and down hillsides. The hiking terrain is moderately strenuous, but the pace will be slow. 

    There is no fee and anyone with an interest is welcome to come along. Children are welcome with adult accompaniment.

    Registration is strongly encouraged.

    Those who participate should be sure to dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear.

    If the weather is especially inclement on the day of the trip, it will be rescheduled (Friday, February 16, 2018)

    Location:  Yankauer Preserve is located across the street from 455 Whiting's Neck Rd, Martinsburg, WV.  The entrance is well marked with ample parking available.

    Join us for a day of maintenance day at Yankauer Nature Preserve! Learn about invasive climbing vines, how they impact native habitat and what techniques best control them. We will walk the trails to clear them and to cut invasive plants from the native habitat. Gather among friends for some hot coffee, cocoa, tea and cookies while we complete some trail maintenance work at Yankauer Nature Preserve.

    Yankauer Nature Preserve protects native habitat for local flora and fauna, and is a favorite local area for hiking and birdwatching in Berkeley County. Maintenance work and invasive species removal is necessary to promote high quality native habitat at Yankauer Nature Preserve.  Your help is appreciated as we work together to clear invasive species and enhance habitat for local wildlife. Every pair of hands helps make a difference! 

    All necessary training, tools, gloves will be provided. Light refreshments will also be available. Yankauer Nature Preserve has bathrooms and water will be available to refill water bottles.
