Youth Camp Scholarship Information
Potomac Valley Audubon Society
will award youth scholarships to environmental education camps for the
summer of 2008. To apply, please complete all five (5) sections of the
application and mail it by the deadline date, April 18, 2008.
Be sure to read the conditions of the scholarship on the second
page of this information sheet.
CAMPS:
Scholarships are being offered to the following camps. Indicate
your choice on your application form, or your first and second choice,
if appropriate.
Audubon Discovery Day
Camp, Yankauer Nature Preserve, Shepherdstown, WV; ages 6 - 12;
mid-June to late July. Each camp week is five days of activities,
9am-3pm, including hikes, nature games, and art projects, led by our
own dedicated PVAS staff. For more information on weekly themes,

Audubon Youth Camp,
Hog Island, Maine; ages 10- 13; August 3-9, 2008.
A landmark in environmental education for over 70 years, this camp is
on a 330-acre island in mid-coast Maine; with “forest hikes, boat
cruises, kayaking, and swimming.....led by dedicated educators and naturalists....campers
learn about nature and themselves.” For more information call

Oglebay Institute Junior
Nature Camp, Camp Giscowheco, Dallas Pike (near Wheeling), WV; ages
10-15; July 20-26 or July 27 - August 2, 2008.
Camp setting is in hills and forests of WV,” with professional nature
interpreters and historians on staff; increase your understanding of
natural world while promoting teamwork and personal responsibility.”

The Burgundy Center for
Wildlife Studies, Capon Bridge, WV, ages 11-15; June 22 - July 5
or July 8 - 22 , 2008; "... a unique summer camp that
will fill your days with activities that bring you closer to nature
through arts, games, song, story, hiking and swimming." For

above is suggested for more experienced campers, at the family’s discretions.
We are targeting middle to low income families for this scholarship
– but please apply regardless! Note that
the camp asks the family to contribute $50 toward this camp experience.
The Mountain Adventures
Summer Camp , Spruce Knob, WV; ages 11-17; June 22 - 29, June 29
- July 6, or July 6 - 13, 2008.
"Raft the waters of WV, climb the rocks, bike the trails, watch
the brilliant stars above the campfire, and make friendships and memories

Trout Unlimited Conservation
and Fishing Camp, Syria Virginia (next to Shenandoah
National Park), grades 8 through 11, June 22-27, 2008;
“an exciting week of hands-on action and fun in a beautiful mountain
stream environment that will help a student become a skilled angler

The WV State Conservation
Camp, Camp Caesar, Webster County, WV; June 9-14, 2008; Campers
must be 14 by January 2008 and not past their 18th
birthday on June 1, 2008.
Staffed by professionals from state and federal agencies, this camp
program includes numerous outdoor activities plus class sessions on
topics like wildlife management, fish management, and soil conservation.

APPLICATION ENCLOSURES:
Please read sections 3 and 4 of the application form carefully.
The applicant is asked to write a brief essay about his/her personal
interests, and to send a letter of recommendation from an adult other
than a family member.
CONDITIONS OF THE SCHOLARSHIP:
When you sign your application
you agree to the following:
1. Transportation costs
to the camps are the responsibility of the scholarship recipients.
2. If you are granted
a scholarship, you will be asked to make a presentation on your camp
experience at the PVAS December general meeting. (Place and exact date
to be determined.) Slides, photos, scrapbooks, art, or a form of writing
should be considered for the presentation. PVAS members love to hear
about the adventures and learning experiences of enthusiastic campers!
3. For the scholarship
to the Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies, the recipient and his/her
family are responsible for a portion of the camp fee.
