Here is the map that Windsong sent in her Christmas letter to her family. It shows a portion of the country that is between Tillaberi to the north and Niamey to the south. (The map shown on the main letters page shows just a tiny fraction of the map she sent.)
The map shows some degrees of latitude along the top. For example: 1° 10' and 1° 20' Using this website http://www.wcrl.ars.usda.gov/cec/java/lat-long.htm it appears that the distance between these 2 points is 11.21 miles.
Longitude degrees are shown on the left. Using the same website, one can calculate that from 13° 50' to 13° 40' is 11.51 miles.
Map notes: Niamey, the capital, is at: Latitude: 13° 32' North, Longitude: 2° 05' East. (It is off the lower right hand corner of the map Windsong sent.)
