Volunteer Workday: Spotted Lanternfly Population Reduction

Learn and lend a hand! Join us for a volunteer workday at Yankauer to manage Spotted Lanternfly populations!

PVAS Host: Alexus Smetzer

Free and open to the public. For ages 12 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.

PVMN Volunteer Hours Eligible

Join us for a volunteer workday at Yankauer Nature Preserve to manage Spotted Lanternfly populations. First you will learn why these pesky invaders are such a problem and how to spot them. Then we will head out on the preserve armed with Golden Oil (soybean oil) to attack Spotted Lanternfly egg masses.

  • Walking Distance: 1/2 mile
  • Pace: Light and easy
  • Exposure: Under forest canopy
  • Terrain: Flat to moderate hiking trails
  • Restroom: There are composting toilets on site
  • Parking/Where to Meet: Participants should meet in the parking lot
  • What to Bring: Participants should wear sturdy footwear, dress appropriately for the prevailing weather conditions. Bring your work gloves, a refillable water bottle, and any accessories that will help you stay comfortable.

About Alexus: Alexus is a recent Shepherd University graduate with a B.S. in environmental studies with a focus in aquatics. During her time there she worked in the aquaponics laboratory at “Tabler Farm”, was a member of Pi Epsilon, and served on the executive board for her sorority Delta Zeta that was very active in the community. Alexus has always had a love for conservation and is very excited to work with the PVAS team! Alexus loves being in nature, hiking, reading and spending time with her two dogs Clover and Banks as well as her two cats Spruce and Juniper.
