CANCELED | Don’t Get Lost! Basic Map Reading & Land Navigation

Join Master Naturalist Bob Thompson for an introduction to map reading and orienteering!
PVAS Host: Bob Thompson
$5/person (PVAS members receive a 10% discount). For ages 16 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. This program is limited to 12 participants and has a minimum of 3 participants.
PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible
Participants will learn the fundamentals of map reading and land navigation in a fun, practical program focused on real-world skills. The session includes a classroom presentation and outdoor practice (but not a full compass course). You’ll leave with memorable, useful skills to help keep you safe in the outdoors. Maps and compasses will be provided.
- Walking Distance: <1 mile right around the nature center
- Pace/Activities:
- Exposure: Mostly open, some canopy cover
- Terrain: Hard ground/hiking trail in some areas, mowed grass in other areas. Gentle slopes/rolling hills
- Restroom: Indoor, flushing restrooms are available in the Case Nature Center during the indoor portion of the program. Otherwise, participants may use the port-o-pots in the parking lot.
- Parking/Where to Meet: Meet inside the Case Nature Center.
- What to Bring: Pencil and paper. You may bring your own compass, but compasses will be available.
Registration will remain open until the start of the program.
If the required minimum # of people do not register by 4 pm the evening prior, the program will be cancelled.

About our Host: Bob is a certified Master Naturalist, and was a member of the 2023 cohort. He is an Eagle Scout and US Army veteran, with many years of experience in the outdoors. He gets too excited about birds and enjoys nature photography, and can be seen often walking in and around Cool Spring Preserve.
