Experience winter with nature journaling!

Whether you’re reveling in winter or ready to welcome spring, join us at the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship to embrace the shortest month of the year. BRCES has many trails, with something for everyone. On your way to their Educational Pavilion (where we’ll meet), you’ll pass a lovely pond for bird watching, and a large goldenrod meadow along a woodland edge. If you’re curious to hike the trails, you can choose to wander up into a rocky woodland with beautiful moss and lichen covered rock formations, or to wander down along the streams with ironwood and beech trees as your company.  The skunk cabbage may even be in bloom.

Winter is splendid, no matter the weather, so dress for the weather, and tune in to your senses. Come with your nature journal supplies, and a chair for your wandering, if you’d like.
We’ll meet at the Educational Pavilion in the meadow to share prompts and say hello, meander the trails and fields at our own pace, and eventually return again to the pavilion to add details to our work and share inspiration. The pavilion is about a 10 minute walk from the parking areas, so come a bit early if you are able.  The lower trails tend to be wet and muddy, so consider your footwear accordingly.
Whether you’ve been keeping journals for years, or a budding beginner, we welcome you to come out and put pencil to paper in the company of other enthusiasts.
Directions:  From the intersection of US 340 and Rt. 671 east of Harpers Ferry, go south on Rt. 671/Harpers Ferry Road for 1.9 miles to the center on the right.  Follow gravel road to parking spaces.  Map kiosk at trail head. Meet at the Educational Pavilion (which is a 10 minute walk from the parking areas)
  • Bring your journal and any supplies you prefer.
  • Dress for the weather, bring water, and wear warm, comfortable walking shoes/boots.
  • Bring binoculars and/or loupe for observation.
  • Bring your own chair for use out in the preserve, if you would like one.
