Fossils and Foliage Field Trip

Join the Potomac Valley Master Naturalists on an adventure for foliage and fossils!

This is a free/donation-based program. For ages 16 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. and limited to 15 participants.
This program has a minimum of 3 participants.

Join the Potomac Valley Master Naturalists on an adventure to admire the fall foliage from the beautiful vista at Cooper’s Rock and to explore deep time at theMuseum of West Virginia Geology and Natural History. We will enjoy a packed lunch and enjoy the scenes of the fall foliage together. From there we will head over to the West Virginia Geological & Economic Survey for our scheduled tour at 1:30 tour.
- Walking Distance: About a mile or less. There are optional walks around the Cooper’s Rock vicinity with varying levels of difficulty and terrain.
- Restroom: Restrooms are available for this program.
- Parking/Where to Meet: Meet at Coopers Rock overlook at 11 am. A map of the State Park can be found here (meeting location is circled in yellow). From there the group will head to the West Virginia Geological & Economic Survey (1 Mont Chateau Rd, Morgantown, WV 26508, Google Maps link for the museum) We suggest that you consider carpooling with friends (at this time, we are unable to arrange a carpool meetup. If that changes we will notify registered participants and update this page)
- What to Bring: Bring a packed lunch and dress for the weather – the group will be stopping at Cooper’s Rock which is much higher elevation than the Eastern Panhandle. You may want to bring a camera or binoculars for admiring the fall foliage. You may also want to consider bringing a method of payment for the museum gift shop.
Registration will remain open until the start of the program.
If the required minimum # of people do not register by 4 pm the evening prior, the program will be cancelled.

About our Host: Roy Boyle is a middle school science teacher with a very real addiction to birding and all things nature. His degrees include a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Science Education. Roy has worked as a state park environmental educator and has been birding for over 40 years. Roy sets up and offers an online Kahoot game on various subjects every other month for Potomac Valley Audubon Society where Master Naturalists play along for education credit. He is also a member of Potomac Valley Master Naturalists and currently serves as Education Chair.
