There are contaminants in our drinking water.

Chemicals called PFAS have been detected throughout West Virginia, including public drinking water systems in the Eastern Panhandle: Berkeley Springs, Charles Town, Harpers Ferry, Kearneysville, Martinsburg, and Summit Point. PFAS are used to produce countless waterproof, stain resistant, and non-stick products considered essential to health, safety, or modern life. Unfortunately, these “forever chemicals” don’t break down under natural environmental conditions. Today, PFAS are found in soils, air, water, and nearly every human’s blood. Current scientific research suggests that exposure to certain PFAS may lead to adverse health outcomes.

Let’s create an action plan!

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is creating PFAS Action Plans for every public drinking water system affected by PFAS contamination. WVDEP is partnering with the West Virginia Rivers Coalition, Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services, and other local partners to host community meetings to provide information, answer questions, and gather feedback. Your input, especially identification of potential sources, is vital to developing comprehensive and effective action plans. Attend any of the planned informal, relaxed meetings being held throughout the Eastern Panhandle. Bring a friend!
