Wednesday, November 11, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Presenter: Ellen Murphy

PVMN Continuing Education Eligible

This event is free and will be presented via zoom. Everyone is welcome to join.

The Potomac Valley Audubon Society welcomes Ellen Murphy, Master Naturalist and retired PVAS Program Director.

Susan Fluharty, Master Naturalist and retired teacher, and Ellen Murphy have teamed up to produce ‘Road Warriors’, PVAS’s November Program. Mrs. Fluharty researched and compiled information on our local roadside weeds found along secondary roads as well as I-81, and together, Ellen and Susan have produced ‘Road Warriors’. Mrs. Murphy will discuss those common weeds in the November Monthly Program.

Ellen Murphy was the Program Specialist for Potomac Valley Audubon Society for 11 1/2 years.  Prior to joining PVAS in 2006, she had a varied career, as a National Park Service Ranger, a professional Girl Scout camp director, and a church program director. Ellen spent much of her time with PVAS in the classroom, teaching programs to grades K-5 on a variety of natural history subjects.  Although she majored in History at Appalachian State University in Boone NC, she has come to love West Virginia and sharing nature with children.  In fact, she feels like that is one of the greatest things anyone can do.
She and her husband, Kevin, live outside of Harpers Ferry and have 2 dogs, both pound puppies, the latest in a long line of mutts.  Everything they own is covered in dog hair and she’s happy to share pictures.  She’s been a WV Master Naturalist since 2007.  She developed this program out of curiosity about the plants she saw driving about the Eastern Panhandle.

Susan lives in Martinsburg, WV, and is a retired teacher from Berkeley County Schools and a Potomac Valley Master Naturalist. In 2014, after attending a lecture on the plight of the Monarch butterfly, Susan and her husband, Scott, were inspired to create a Monarch butterfly way station in their backyard. Susan developed a Monarch conservation program for children and has shared her passion for Monarchs in many classrooms in Cerkeely Co., as well as local garden clubs and summer nature camps. An avid baker, Susan is know far and wide for her tart cherry pies!
