Garden Planting Volunteer Workday at Cool Spring Preserve

Join Bob and the members of the Windflower Garden Club for the start of a garden remodel project at Cool Spring Preserve!

Free and open to the public. For ages 12 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required

PVMN Volunteer Credit Eligible.


Thanks to grant funding from the Windflower Garden Club, the Thornton Cottage front garden beds are getting a remodel this year! Our wonderful restoration leader, Bob Schwartz, is helping us to remove the non-native species and reclaim this garden as a shady, pollinator-friendly rain garden. It’s fall which means it’s time to plant the garden! Join us for a fun and educational volunteer workday.

  • Walking Distance: Minimal (~200 feet)
  • Pace/Activities: Activities will include bending, stopping, and lifting.
  • Exposure: Mixed shade/sun
  • Terrain: N/A N/A
  • Restroom: There is a port-o-pot onsite
  • Parking/Where to Meet: Meet in the parking lot outside the Case Nature Center
  • What to Bring: Bring your work gloves, favorite gardening tools, a refillable water bottle, and any accessories that will help you stay comfortable!

If the required minimum # of people do not register by 4 pm the evening prior, the program will be cancelled.

About Bob: Originally from Chicago, Bob earned an undergraduate degree in Forest Ecosystem Science and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin- Madison and is about to complete a Master of Science in Environmental Biology and Climate Change from Hood College in Maryland. Bob serves as Western Watershed Forester for the Maryland Forest Service where he works with private and public landowners to improve forested watershed health through facilitation of cooperative conservation and restoration projects. In his free time Bob is a book nerd, loves to explore far and wide to find cool habitats, and work in his native plant garden. He lives in Brunswick, MD with his wife Ellen and their crazy cats.
